Every year, as the festive season approaches, many of you set up an advent calendar in your home, but did you know that there’s another generous and supportive way to tick off the days until Christmas Eve?
Let us introduce you to the reverse Advent calendar, which we’ve been practicing since 2018 (more about it at the end of the article).
What is the reverse Advent calendar?
The reverse Advent Calendar is about giving rather than receiving. In concrete terms, instead of opening a window every day to get a small gift, you give an object, a non-perishable food item or a donation to a charity every day during the Advent period.
Once you’ve put all your donations in a box or carton, all you have to do is hand over what you’ve collected to a charity, a local association or a family in need. It’s a way of sharing the spirit of Christmas with those who need it most.
What are the advantages of the reverse Advent calendar?
1. It emphasizes generosity.
This tradition reminds us of the importance of giving and generosity during the holiday season. It helps us move away from the bad habits associated with excessive consumption to focus on caring for others.
2. It strengthens community ties:
The Reverse Advent Calendar can also bring members of a community together, whether it’s a family, a group of friends, a workplace or a school. It creates a sense of unity.
3. It has a positive impact on both giver and receiver:
Every little bit counts. By making modest donations every day, you can make a real difference to the lives of people in need.
How to create your own Reverse Advent Calendar :
You can use a basket, a box or any other container you have on hand.
Think about what you can give each day. This could be non-perishable food, warm clothing, toys, hygiene products, etc.
Choose a specific charity, family or group to which you will donate the items collected.
Start on December 1 and add a new item or donation to the container every day.
On Christmas Day (or in the days following), deliver your collection to the charity or person of your choice.
In conclusion, the Reverse Advent Calendar brings a new and significant dimension to the festive season. By focusing on generosity and sharing, we can rediscover the true spirit of Christmas and make a positive difference to the lives of those in need.
So why not try your hand at creating your own Reverse Advent Calendar this year and spread the joy around you?
